The Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) is an independent institute
of the University of Turku in Finland. CMS was founded in 1980 to
operate in the field of maritime research and university-level continuing
education. The main office is situated in Turku, on the southwestern
coast of Finland. The Centre has two field offices, one in Pori and
one in Rauma. The staff consists of about 30 persons. The key activities
of the CMS are research, continuing education, regional development
and organising conferences.
CMS provides a wide range of research and development services to
both private and public sectors nationally and internationally. The
research and development projects concentrate mainly in port operations,
international shipping policy, maritime safety and environmental issues
as well as in transport and logistics: supply of transport services
and port-hinterland development.
The Centre for Maritime Studies has participated in several EU financed
projects in the Baltic Sea Region.
