Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Institute of Transport Sciences

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) Transport research institute includes main research trends in road, railway, sea and air transport.

- strategy and forecasts (logistics, economics) of transport system activities;
- development of different modes of transport (traffic safety, environmental protection, saving of energy resources);
- development of intermodal transport;
- investigation and improvement of communication lines and constructions (roads, airports, port quays and their buildings, bridges, viaducts, tunnels; investigation of their condition and renovation);
- establishment of laws regulating the transport system activities and draft by laws; co-ordination of the Lithuanian transport legislation with that of the international legal transport system.

Apart from the aforementioned applied activities, the VGTU Transport Institute invites all the Lithuanian transport scientists to contribute to the implementation of fundamental activities and special programmes.

There are 56 specialists and experts in the Transport Institute, who are preparing projects. The Transport Science Institute has a close co-operation with the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications; it carries out its obligations for consultants and research studies. The Institute has collected a wide transport system research data basis. The Transport Science Institute has potential enough for participation in international programmes.
