LEAD PARTNER - Centre for Maritime Studies
The Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) is an independent institute of the University of Turku in
Finland. CMS was founded in 1980 to operate in the field of maritime research and university-level
continuing education. The main office is situated in Turku, on the southwestern coast of Finland.
The Centre has two field offices, one in Pori and one in Rauma. The staff consists of about 30 persons.
The key activities of the CMS are research, continuing education, regional development and organising
conferences.
One of the principal tasks of CMS is to promote maritime research and regional development. The research
projects concentrate mainly in studying different angles of port operations, international shipping
policy, environmental issues and safety questions. The regional development projects deal with transport
and logistics: supply of transport services, maritime safety and port-hinterland development.
The Centre for Maritime Studies has participated in several EU financed projects in the Baltic Sea Region.
